Preventive plumbing maintenance that you can do yourself, will definitely save you money.
Pay attention to your drains. Most plumbing repair calls are for clogged drains. Grease or sludge builds up over time and causes clogs. There are preventive measures you can take to counteract this buildup. There are several products available on the market that have been designed to reduce grease buildup such as Bio-clean (available from us). Definitely don’t use anything with harsh chemicals as these can cause more harm than good. Pouring soapy, near boiling water down the drain periodically will help reduce grease buildup.
Hair is another cause of many stoppages. In many cases, hair can be trapped in a screen or drain cover. Talk to your local hardware store and ask about screens to prevent the hair from getting in the drain. It’s much easier to gather hair off the screen periodically than it is to deal with a clogged pipe.
Don’t forget about your water heater. It is a good idea to drain your tank annually to remove sediment buildup from the bottom of the tank. If you have a tankless water heater, they should be descaled annually. The scale deposits left behind during the heating process can eventually eat through the copper heat exchanger.
A routine of preventive plumbing maintenance can pay off in the long run.
